Gifting Microwaves To Help Two Families

A week prior to the beginning of a new school year, Love INC was distributing school supplies for families identified as needing a little extra assistance as part of the Adopt-a-Student program. We have another program called the Friday Backpack program which provides students with food for the weekend during the school year and there is a sign-up opportunity during the Adopt-a-Student school supply distribution event.

On the paperwork for the Friday Backpack program, there is a question asking if the families have a working microwave, as it is needed to cook some of the food provided. Love INC staff noticed that two of the families* who signed up for their children to be a part of the backpack program stated they did not have a microwave.

Love INC contacted its partner churches to see if anyone had a used microwave for these two families. Much to our surprise, one person heard about it prior to sending the message to the churches. This person didn’t have a used microwave but went to the store and bought two brand new microwaves.

When Love INC staff contacted the families to tell them we had new microwaves for them, both families were very grateful.

* At the time of this story a few years ago there were 21 students – as of 2026 there are now almost 50 students signed up for the Friday Backpack program in the Canton School District
